Job Hopping Your Way to a Long-Term Career?

Mar17Not so many years ago, the general consensus among employers about job hopping was this: don’t do it. Having a string of jobs listed on your resume – jobs that you only had for 1 or 2 years (if that) – was a potential sign of a candidate’s unloyalty to their past employers and uncertainty about the desired direction of his or her career.

Today, job hopping isn’t quite as taboo as it once was – especially for Millennials (18-32 year olds). According to a survey from PayScale and Millennial Branding, 2015 is the first year that Millennials will comprise more of the U.S. workforce than Gen X’ers and Baby Boomers. And with the shift to a younger workforce comes the belief that job hopping is a good thing for your career.

Potential Drawbacks
It’s important to know, however, that job hopping does have its disadvantages:

  • Frequent job hopping can raise a red flag for employers and hurt your chances for future employment.
  • There’s less job security. If you’re one of the new employees, and the company faces layoffs, you could very well be one of the first to go.
  • If you switch jobs often, you won’t have a chance to experience the satisfaction of working on long-term projects. You might even miss out on the opportunity to shape and define your own role within the company.

So while job hopping may occur in certain stages of your career, many people in the workforce do ultimately look for job satisfaction from a long-term employer.
